Case Analysis Assignments Each student will select one Case for Evaluation presented in the chapter readings for the week starting Week 2 and continuing through Week 7 for Online or hybrid courses. For In-seat or full 15 week courses, case studies should be assigned every other week starting Week 3. Encourage students to read the information on how to analyze a case before proceeding. Some students find it helpful to have an open office hour specifically devoted to how to set-up and write this assignment at the beginning of Week 2. Student instructions: Be careful not to plagiarize any material. Use your own words to describe the work. Use quotation marks for direct quotes only when absolutely necessary and generally no more than one direct quote should be used per case study. Formal, professional language is expected. Avoid using the first person (I, me), avoid slang, contractions, rhetorical questions, etc. APA formatting is required for this assignment. If you have taken this course previously, you are not allowed to re-use/recycle any case study from the previous course - you must submit a new case study from the weeks' chapter. If you do re-use/recycle your case study, it will be considered cheating and you will receive a zero grade for the assignment. Use the following tools to develop your analysis: For each question listed after the case, make sure to answer it by explaining your reasoning or rational. It's not enough to say that you believe or think a certain way without backing it up with data or reference to reliable sources (including information from the case and outside sources). Engage your best reasoning powers, especially by seeing how ideas, beliefs, information, and premises are translated into conclusions. Try to formalize arguments on all sides; determine premises and conclusions. Figure out and clearly state the moral problem or problems. Do different actors interpret the moral problem differently? (Sometimes in a moral conflict, people disagree about the solution; sometimes they disagree about the problem. Often they disagree about both!) Dig for bias and assumptionyour own and that of the individuals in the case study. Can you make assumptions explicit? Search for additional relevant information. Determine who the stakeholders are. Are all stakeholders being included? Are there some people who are involved but are not legitimate stakeholders? Be prepared to explain why you believe someone is or is not a legitimate stakeholder. Assess personal factors. (What is your own gut-level reaction? Should you trust your gut on this one? Is this an issue that you've thought about before? Do you have personal experiences that might influence your reasoning?) Relate particular judgments to principles and broader theories; move fluidly between the particular and the general. Consider comparable or more familiar problems. Consider extreme cases (even the so-called slippery slope). What might these tell you? Assess the credibility of assertions made on all sides.
