A Jamaican-based packaging company was recently acquired with 1,000 employees Islandwide.
The Situation
The Company inherited outdated job descriptions, pay structure, and performance management tools from the former parent company. The former parent company could not validate or explain the compensation structure's methodology for the various roles.
A salary survey was commissioned two years ago, but the result was never received. There were no plan documents in place outlining terms and conditions for pay increases or incentive pay-outs. There had been no comprehensive job analysis done in over ten (10) years. The Company only paid benefits to their senior managers, and the employees had decided to form a union a year before the acquisition.
A new HR structure was implemented. The Director of Compensation and Benefits was asked to identify and address the most critical issues and ensure that the Compensation Strategy was aligned to the Company's strategy.
