Case study:
As the world's largest company, Amazon.com has a huge effect on the global economy. It also employs more than 500 000 individuals for roles in its warehouses, which it calls fulfilment centre and the way it treats those employees matters. Employees have been quitting almost fast as they could be hired, a recent report from Yahoo! News (Gilbert, 2021). The company has drawn criticism from multiple sources, where the ethics of certain business practices and policies have been drawn into question. Amazon has faced numerous allegations of anticompetitive or monopolistic behaviour, as well as criticisms of their treatment of workers and consumers. Employees at Amazon's fulfilment centres have made many complaints. In the warehouses, workers claim they are assigned back-breaking chores. They also express dissatisfaction with intrusive surveillance technology such as automatic tracking devices and cameras that track their every step. There is a tangible concern that workers may be fired if they fail to achieve quotas. As a result, workers have begun to agitate for a union. A union campaign was undertaken in Alabama, but it was prevented and failed. In November 2019, 600 Amazon warehouse workers signed and handed a petition to the company's management, urging them to improve working conditions. The petition requested that Amazon combine worker's two 15-minute breaks into a single 30-minute break. Walking to and from the warehouse break room, according to workers, can take up to 15 minutes. Workers also demanded that Amazon offer more consistent public transportation to the warehouse. They also brought up claims of high injury rates at the facility, which were found to be three times higher than the national average for warehouses, according to the company's injury records to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA). During the pandemic, Warehouse workers voiced their concerns about Amazon not taking enough precautions about the spread of the virus at the centre and as result, the company was reported that it has fired several other employees who were complaining about organizing working condition. All workers have the right to safe and healthy workplace - silencing them only makes the problem worse
