CASE STUDY. BOKSBURG FUEL TANKER EXPLOSION On 24 December 2022, at least 8 people were killed and 50 injured after a fuel tanker exploded in Boksburg on the East Rand of Gauteng on Saturday morning. Emergency workers are on the scene in Railway Street, about 100m from Tambo Memorial Hospital. Ekurhuleni Emergency Services spokesperson William Ntladi said eight people died, while Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi said 10 people were killed and about 50 people were injured. "Apparently, a gas tanker drove under the subway bridge and got stuck in there, and due to friction, it caught alight," said Ntladi. He said six firefighters from Boksburg Central Fire Station were called to the scene to help extinguish the blaze. "While doing the fire suppression, there was an explosion that took place," added Ntladi. He said a fire engine and two motor vehicles were also destroyed in the explosion. Ntladi added that firefighters were still on the scene battling the blaze while also attending to two homes nearby following the explosion. Former drivers of Infinite Transport - which owns the gas tanker that exploded in Boksburg on Christmas Eve said they were unfairly dismissed by the company. About 20 former employees of the transport and logistics company gathered at the Boksburg Magistrates Court on Wednesday, where the driver at the centre of the explosion was expected to face counts of culpable homicide. One of the former truck drivers, David Mofokeng, said experienced permanent drivers were replaced by drivers from an employment agency.
