Case Study Brief #: Negative Noreen
Paragraph
The problem in this case study is that Noreens attitude is negatively affecting fellow coworkers and the relationship with the head of another section within the company causing turmoil.
The problem in this case study is that there is turmoil between coworkers and department heads which is in turn souring work relationships and creating a negative atmosphere in the workplace. Noreens relentless complaints about the way things are done are causing a chain reaction. Other employees within the customer service section are becoming upset and frustrated, and starting arguments about the things Noreen complains about as well as Noreen herself. Noreen is also causing problems with the head of manufacturing, accusing him of not understanding her requirements, deadlines, and priorities.
Paragraph
In the attempt to solve the problem in this case study, there are a few potential alternatives to consider. The first alternative that I would suggest would be to try and identify the root cause of Noreens complaints. Only by identifying the root cause of the complaints, can it be addressed or corrected. Another alternative would be to counsel Noreen on her behavior. By doing this Noreen will become more aware of how she is acting, she will get feedback on her behavior as well as being given a chance to correct it The last alternative is to do nothing about Noreens behavior and allow Noreen to work out her own complaints. By doing this, Noreen could potentially come to the realization that complaining about the situation will not help crate possible solutions, and instead she could create potential solutions to her own complaints.
Paragraph
For this case study, I would suggest using both the first and second alternatives as previously mentioned to solve the problem. I would first suggest implementing the first solution by identifying the root cause of Noreens complaints. Doing this would allow the complaints that Noreen has will be properly addressed, Noreen will feel that she is heard, and if the complaints are of substance, they can be corrected. The second solution to this problem is counseling Noreen on her behavior in the workplace. By counseling Noreen, the employee is becoming aware of her behavior, why this behavior is an issue, how it can be corrected, and time for the employee to correct the behavior. The third solution of not doing anything and letting the problem work itself out is not the best option in this scenario, because of how much turmoil is being caused amongst the employees. Not doing anything could lead to potentially more problems. If Noreens behavior is not addressed, it could cause continued turmoil and aggression in the section leading to a toxic work environment with possible higher position turnover rates with employee dissatisfaction.
Paragraph
To implement the first solution, a checkin should be had with the employee. Have a oneonone meeting with Noreen, listen to her complaints and figure out the root cause of them together, as a team. Then while in the checkin encourage Noreen to make possible solutions to what she is complaining about and work through those solutions together. To implement the second solution of counseling Noreen, I would suggest starting from the very first negative behavioral issue she expressed. By having regular counseling sessions with employees, the employee becomes aware of how their behavior is being perceived by others and how its affecting the work dynamics. This also gives the employee time to correct or improve their behavior if it does not align with the best of the company.
Paragraph
To evaluate the results of these two solutions, I would suggest looking at the satisfaction rates of the employees in the customer service section as well as the departments Noreen regularly interacts with. If the satisfaction rates have increased, then the solutions are working. If less arguments are documented and less complaints are made publicly by Noreen, then the solutions are working.
