Answer as a group based on the scenarios and the core concepts in EVT. While you will be working as a group, you must complete your own worksheet to include in your personal theory book. 1. Based on EVT and its concepts, who do you think Suzie will call back/keep in touch with? Why? 2. What reasoning do you think Suzie used (based on EVT) to rule out the other two dates? 3. What factors affected Suzie's reaction to the kiss from John? 4. Can you think of a situation when the proximity of an interaction effected the way you perceived the relationship with that individual? 5. How do you know when it is safe to deviate from actions a recipient is already anticipating/expecting? EVT Case Study Narrative Suzie is a 35-year old women that lives in Manhattan. She is a pediatrician and her career consumes most of her time. Because of this, Suzie is single and does not have the time to go out with her friends. Suzie is tired of being single and has aspirations of finding a partner and settling down to start a family. Suzie decides to join eHarmony. She enjoys looking at different men's profiles and comes across three or four of them she may be interested in. She begins messaging back and forth with a couple and decides it's time to start dating. Bachelor #1: John John is a chiropractor, who is very successful and good looking. Suzie and John meet at a find dining restaurant in downtown New York City. Suzie isn't used to being wined and dined, so she is fairly excited for this date. As the date goes on, John's subpar personality comes out. Even though he's not very interesting, he is definitely easy on the eyes so Suzie decides to stick it out. At the end of their not so interesting date, Suzie leans in for a hug to say her goodbyes and is surprised to see John coming in for a kiss. As their lips press together Suzie is shocked and really uncomfortable, but for some reason enjoys the kiss and is quite satisfied at the end of their date. Bachelor #2: Todd Todd is from Princeton, NJ. He is in his late 30's and is a professor at Princeton University where he teaches Theories of Communication. After looking at Todd's profile, Suzie decides that Todd is kind of dorky and not as good looking as John, however, his communication on eHarmony hints that he has a great personality and a quirky sense of humor that makes Suzie laugh. So, Todd and Suzie meet at an Irish pub halfway between the city and Princeton to have a few beers and appetizers. Suzie is having a great time and decides that Todd is a great guy and really easy to talk to. When it was time to say their goodbyes, Todd gives Suzie a big hug, smiles, and says he's excited to see her soon. Suzie was expecting a little peck, but was satisfied with the bear hug. Bachelor #3: Chase Finally, Chase is from Long Island, NY. He is a very successful architect and shares a lot of the same interests as Suzie. Chase is a little bit older than the other two men being in his middle 40's. Chase decides to invite Suzie to a crab shack on Long Island where they supposedly would enjoy the best seafood in New York! Throughout the entire date, Suzie can hardly catch a break to add to the conversation while he talks about himself and his architect career. Suzie is not impressed and is quite bored. Relieved that the waitress finally brought the bill, Chase reaches out his hand to grab hers to tell her that she is beautiful and leans in for a kiss. Suzie turns her head to the left, so he ends up leaving a peck on his cheek. Chase's ego is shot down and gets the hint that it is time to go.
