Case study LC is a 13-year-old African-American male. He is in the 7th grade middle school, and his IEP classification is speech or language impairment. He receives mandated individual and group counseling once per week for 30 minutes. His individual counseling goal is to be able to identify and communicate his feelings (i.e., anger, anxiety, stress, frustration) by utilizing at least two strategies (i.e., identifying and naming his feelings as things happen and learning new feeling words). His group counseling goal is to acquire two new social skills per quarter, including initiating conversations with peers and adults, participating in turn-taking during structured activities, and recognizing positive social interactions. LC is the oldest child of two kids. It's him and his younger brother CS. He lives with his mom and younger brother. He is high-performance academically and always on the high honor roll list. He is currently residing with his stepdad, his younger brother's father, because his mom is hospitalized after refusing to take her schizophrenia medication and did not eat or drink for two weeks. Since the move to his stepdad, LC has been very emotional and withdrawn because his commute is much longer, and he has to wake up an hour earlier to get to school on time. His stepdad lives in a different borough from the school. LC has shared that he is concerned about his mom's health because she looked very sick when he went to visit her at the hospital.
