Case Study : Motorolas Biometrics Solutions Require Large-Managing Database

Motorola advertises its Biometric Identification Solution (BIS), named Printrak as follows: From fingerprints and palmprints to mugshots, signatures and case record, Motorola Printrak BIS allows you to enter, search and match, identify and verify. The companys Biometric Solutions, a division of its Government and Enterprise Mobility Solutions (GEMS)

unit, has provided automated fingerprint and palmprint identification systems, inkless live- scan stations, and mobile fingerprint capture solutions used by law enforcement,

government, and civil agencies in more than 37 countries. The BIS is an integrated suite of applications that runs on an Oracle database. Indexing and

processing the massive amounts of data that flows through the system requires state-of- the-art database technologies. The system is much more than an automated fingerprint

identification system. The database stores graphical descriptive data such as fingerprints, palmprints, facial images, iris images, signatures and even audio clips. It also holds textual data, including demographic information and criminal investigation information. Some businesses use the BIS to run security checks on job applicants. One valuable aspect of this system is that it can be altered to match a variety of uses.

Each customer requires a different schema for the demographic and case- or applicant- related information they store, so we use XML for maximum flexibility says Aris Prassinos

of the divisions technical staff. XML, the Extensible Markup Language, is the standardized markup language used to describe different types of data. It has become popular for use with database technologies because it provides an ideal method for manipulating database record over the internet. Because of the nature of the data it stores, a Printrak BIS database is typically very large. Considering that a 1,000-ppi scan of a palm can comprise several megabytes, its not uncommon for the database to be anywhere from 1, 2, or 3 terabytes in size. The large BIS database are often managed by grid computing systems that harness many computers sharing the computational demands. With grid computing power, the system can quickly draw impressive results from the huge database. Three months after deploying Printrak, criminal officials in Palm Beach country, Florida used it to solve 75 crimes, including burglaries. The BIS division at Motorola appreciates the automated management features of Oracle Database 10g. These features include automatic tuning and management features that allow the system to adjust itself over time for optimum performance. This is importance to Printrak customers, who rarely have the staff to properly support the system A) Provide the unique aspects of Motorolas Biometric Identification Solution (BIS) that required special database functionality and support B) Explain BIS is assist in putting together the pieces of several related crimes. C) Describe the useful of BIS in businesses include the type of businesses would benefit most from such a system
