Case study
Sarah is in the staff kitchen on a break and two other staff members, Tom and Jessica, are talking about some of the children in each of their rooms. Tom is talking about how one child's parents have just separated and the mother has requested that the father does not do pickups. Tom proceeds to tell Jessica that he suspects family violence has occurred as he had reported his suspicions in the past to his supervisor. Sarah politely interrupts the conversation and makes an attempt to dissuade both colleagues from discussing this sensitive issue in a public place as a parent could potentially overhear them and report this. As soon as Sarah turns to leave the staff kitchen, she realises that her colleagues have decided to ignore her advice and have resumed their conversation. A parent who was picking up a sick child overheard the conversation from the hall and decided to report it to the supervisor on the grounds that it was a breach of client confidentiality and privacy
