Case study Stefan is a 23-year-old man who is living at home with his mum and two younger siblings. Stefan is studying I.T. at TAFE and works part-time as a waiter at the local caf. His mum, Maria, has become increasingly worried about Stefan's behaviour. Stefan has not seemed himself for several months now. He has been withdrawn from his family and friends, he is no longer interested in studying at TAFE, and rarely goes to work. Maria has noticed that Stefan is becoming increasingly paranoid about his friends, family, and next-door neighbours. He has been confused in his thinking and on many occasions, Maria has overheard him say "shut up" or "stop it" to himself. Maria has noticed that Stefan is constantly stealing money and asking to borrow the family car, and when she refuses he becomes very aggressive, which is very unlike his typical demeanour. Maria is worried that his increasingly aggressive behaviour may put herself and her younger children at risk of harm. When she suggested that he seek some help, he shouted that he doesn't trust doctors and became verbally abusive towards Maria, and stormed out of the house, returning dishevelled two days later. When Maria raised this again, he mentioned that he had a friend who felt like this and was never the same after he went to the doctors. His friend, after starting medication, put on a lot of weight, and said he felt "like a zombie". Maria is very concerned about Stefan and his mental health. She wants to both help Stefan and to protect herself and her younger children. It is helpful to consider multiple perspective when assessing the needs of a person, in this instance, the lived experience of Stefan and his significant others, Maria (his mother and siblings). Questions 1. What would you consider to be Stefan's immediate core treatment needs from his own perspective? Please justify your answer. 2. What would you consider to be Stefan's long term treatment goals from his own perspective? Please justify your answer. 3. Outline the options for addressing Stefan's needs/goals under the current Victorian Mental Health Service Delivery Model. Please discuss briefly how Stefan's needs might best be addressed by this system. 4. What would you consider to be Maria's needs from her own perspective? Please justify your answer. 5. In your opinion briefly discuss whether the current system strikes an appropriate balance between their competing needs
