Case study

You have been charged with the responsibility of organising the State Badminton Tournament that is expected to attract around 256 participants, male and female. Competition is planned to commence at 9:00am each day and continue to 7:00pm for five days.

Competition will take place in four age groups:

Under 16

  • Under 18
  • Under 20

Open

You are to assume that each competitor will be playing in singles, doubles and mixed doubles. There will be no additions to the stated 256 competitors however. All competitors must find a partner for doubles and mixed doubles amongst others in their age group.

You have found a suitable venue that has five courts but you are not sure yet how many days you will need to book it. The cost of the venue you are considering is $600 per day.

Tasks

1.Assuming that the tournament is a Knockout format and that all competitors will compete in singles, doubles and mixed doubles, work out how many matches must be played. Competitors will compete only in their age group (Open means 20 and over).

2.You must also work out the number of days that you will require the venue to complete the tournament using all five courts simultaneously. For the sake of this exercise let's say that each Badminton match will take on average 30 minutes to complete, and that there will be an immediate turnaround.

3.You will need to work out how many medals you require and place an order at the local trophy shop. Medals will be awarded to winners and runners-up only in each draw.

On the basis of the following information, develop a budget for this tournament:

i.Medallions can be bought for $5.00 each including engraving

ii.Competitors will be expecting to pay an entry fee of $30 per person for the entire tournament.

iii.The State Bank has sponsored the tournament for $2,000.

iv.Some sponsorship signs have been ordered which will cost $200.

v.Printing the program will cost $200.

vi.Catering will cost $200 per day.

vii.Shuttlecocks and other tournament consumables will cost $1 per match.

viii.Refereeing costs will amount to $12 per hour.

ix.Other incidental costs are expected to amount to $100

x.Venue cost is $600 per day

4.What is the profit that this tournament will make on the above information?
