Case Summary:

Karrion Company (KC) is a manufacturer that does not have any beginning or ending inventories. It had sales of $49 million during its first year of operations. You have been asked to help the company organize and visualize its costs from the prior year and to help prepare its traditional and contribution format income statements. Download the Excel file, which you will use to create the Tableau visualizations requested by the company. Upload the Excel file into Tableau by doing the following:

  1. Open the Tableau Desktop application.
  2. On the lefthand side, under the Connect header and the To a file sub-header, click on Microsoft Excel.
  3. Choose the Excel file and click Open.
  4. Since the only worksheet in the Excel File is Cost Summary it will default as a selection with no further import steps needed

Create a stacked bar chart in Tableau that includes two bars. The first bar will show the selling cost and the administrative cost that collectively comprise the total period costs. The second bar will show the direct materials cost, the direct labor cost, and the manufacturing overhead cost that collectively comprise the total product costs.

  • Click on the New Worksheet button at the bottom of your Workbook.
  • Double-click on the newly created Sheet 2 at the bottom and rename it Manufacturing vs. Nonmanufacturing Costs.
  • On the lefthand side under Dimensions (sometimes labeled as Tables) click on Product / Period and drag it to the Columns area above the blank sheet.
  • On the lefthand side under Measures, click on Amount and drag it to the Rows area. This will create a vertical bar chart.
  • The calculation will default to Sum, which is what we want in this instance.
  • To improve viewing, locate the Standard dropdown option in the menu bar at the top of the screen. Click on that dropdown and choose Entire View.
  • To create a stacked bar chart, choose Manufacturing / Nonmanufacturing under Dimensions and drag it into the Color Marks card ()
  • Label each cost category with its respective amount by clicking on Amount under Measures and dragging and dropping it onto the Label Marks card.
    • If the labels appear horizontal, then proceed to the next step. If they do not appear horizontal, then click on the Label Marks card () and under Label Appearance, click on the drop down for Alignment and choose () under direction.
    • If all labels do not appear, then click on the Label Marks card () and check the box at the bottom under options which states Allow Labels to overlap other marks
  • Your visualization should appear as follows:
