Explain how cohesion is relevant to group effectiveness. Cohesion is relevant to group effectiveness because when a group is cohesive those individuals are more likely to work effectively and efficiently when striving towards a common goal. Usually, cohesive teams support each other by effectively communicating, resolving issues, and disseminating information. When you work with the same people for a period of time "members hold a shared bond with one another and are motivated to stay in the group" (Robbins). In addition, cohesion is much more important when roles and responsibilities are divided amongst those a part of a team. In turn, what results is interdependence on one another to accomplish their goals. Finally, the extent to which a group is cohesive is dependent on the group's performance. Describe the characteristics of effective teams. There are three characteristics of effective teams which includes team context, composition, and processes and states (which are variables). Firstly, the context in which a team functions is very important to their performance. Adequate resources, effective leadership, structure, performance evaluations, reward systems, and culture/climate, etc. are all necessary contextual factors to effective teams. Secondly, there are many opinions about how a team should be composed. In any case, what this includes is: diversity, cultural differences, the members' preferences for teamwork, and the abilities and personalities of the team members and how you could group these different variables together to form an effective team. Lastly, the processes that refer to a group's effectiveness is reliant on member commitment, motivation, team identity, trust, and cohesion. Once these aforementioned factors are focused on by managers, they could then foster positive work environments for their employees. References Robbins, S. P., & Judge, T. (2022).
