Cena is a new principal at an elementary school in a rural area of his state. The community boasts a proud heritage of Conservative Christian values. They want the local school district to adhere to those same values and work diligently to hire teachers and administrators who will teach their children those same values. The community also works to ensure elected officials, including school board members, follow the same Conservative Christian values.

In the first board meeting of the new school year, it was made very clear to the superintendent and new principal that the district would not support any policies that did not follow their beliefs. One policy, in particular, that was discussed was the idea of having gender neutral bathrooms. The board immediately voted (unanimously) to reject the idea of gender neutral bathrooms. They made it very clear that if God made you male, then use the male bathroom, and if God made you female, then use the female bathroom. This was added to the school policy manual and student handbooks at all levels.

One morning, shortly after the first bell, the students and teachers heard an extremely loud scream coming from the girls' bathroom. A new student (born anatomically male) had entered the girls' bathroom and began changing clothes. The girl screamed and ran out. The teacher next door proceeded to reprimand the student and explained the gender specific bathroom policy. She wrote a discipline report on the student and sent the student to the principal.
