Chandra, aged 26, was in a car accident which killed her husband and injured her when she was 7 months pregnant. While in the emergency room she gave birth to her first child, a girl she named Meena. Due to the accident Meena was born with significant brain damage and physical injuries. Chandra is devoted to her daughter and spends every day at the hospital, visiting Meena who is now 3 months old and still in the neo-natal ward at the hospital. Chandra has been there each time Meena has needed treatment to restart her breathing or heart. Dr Baker, who has been treating Meena, is of the view that Meena is deteriorating, in growing amounts of pain, and would be unlikely to survive past the age of 2. As a result, Dr Baker informs Chandra that the hospital will no longer provide ventilation or life-saving treatments if Meena suffers another respiratory or heart problem. Chandra refuses to accept this, she demands that the hospital continue to provide this treatment as she believes that some miracle will save Meena and that if they simply give her more time she will outgrow her physical and neurological injuries.
