Chapter 1 introduced us to an array of different sampling methods. We've seen several ways to mitigate bias in sample selection. One of these ways involves simple random sampling, in which everyone has an equal chance of being selected. The following is an exercise that uses an online simple random number generator to obtain various samples of Justin Timberlake fans. You will be asked to arrange an audience of 50 fans before obtaining your simple random sample. If you're feeling particularly adventurous, think about what process you'd use to generalize this activity to stratified, convenience, cluster, and systematic sampling methods.

Instructions: Open and provide your solutions to the following activity attached in the discussion box below. Questions #1-3 will ask you to use a simple random sample (SRS). To accomplish this, you may use the followingRandom Number Generator Calculator(Links to an external site.)

To use the random number generator: if I wished to obtain a sample of 10 between 1 and 50, I'd let the lower limit = 1, and the upper limit = 50, and generate =10. Therefore I'd obtain a sample of 10 via RNG(1, 50). When answering your assigned questions, make sure to include the upper and lower limits used for the RNG, and how you arranged the fans prior to selecting them.

How Much Do Fans Love Justin Timberlake? Justin Timberlake's concert promoter wants to find out how much fans enjoy the concerts. He will ask fans, "From 1 to 100, where 100 is the most, how much did you enjoy the concert?" The section he wants to survey has 50 seats (5 rows x 10 columns). The stage runs along the northern edge of the venue (where Justin is pictured). He wants to take a sample of 10 seats. 1. Method #1: Take a simple random sample (SRS) of 10 fans. Explain below the steps you used to obtain an SRS. 2. Method #2: Randomly choose 2 fans from each horizontal row. 3. Method #3: Randomly choose 1 fan from each vertical column. 4. Which method do you think is best? Why? 5. Now, it's time for the actual data. For each of your samples on the previous page, calculate the average enjoyment. Add your average to the dotplots on the board. Sample #1: Sample #2: Sample #3: Method #1: SRS average enjoyment Method #2: Stratify by Row average enjoyment Method #3: Stratify by Column average enjoymen
