Chapter 2--Theorizing about international Communication The field of international communication is broad and interdisciplinary, but the way we discuss, debate and create global policies be it for trade, peace/war, military, health, environment, information, communication, media, propaganda, immigration, human rights all comes down to how we define the field. The first critical document was the MacBride Report because it opened our eyes to growing communication inequities and the digital divide. It also allowed us to determine the value of a free press and flows of information. Scholars from the developed world began to theorize about the rapidly changing growth of communication and technology and the inevitable outcomes. There were winners and there were losers.
