Chapter 7 Lab: Correlation & Causation Please create a Word (or word-compatible) document and submit this lab on Moodle. Please make sure all of your work/responses are in the document itself, and be sure to include your name on your document. Please delete the instructions/problem; I don't need to read that many more times. ***NOTE: You WANT to do this lab BEFORE doing your homework. These are the steps you will use to complete many of your homework problems. From MyStatLab, open StatCrunch/data sets from your textbook. Go to Chapter 7: Correlation and Causality, and open the data file \"safe_speeds Page 246 Exercise 19.\" Here is the problem from the book, but please note that I am asking for additional information from you for this lab: Relabel the Column headings in StatCrunch. It will simplify the assignment if you do this first. Refer to the table above and make StatCrunch match. 1. Construct a Scatterplot for the data. In StatCrunch, go to Graph Scatterplot. You will need to decide if there is an explanatory variable, and if so, which variable is it? Select this for the xvariable, and the other variable for y. Other fields to fill in: Group by: this will create a color coded key for you. I recommend using this. What information (column) do you need to use to make this useful? Add to hover info: You can put in the same column as you did for Group by, if you want to use this for your own purposes while you are in StatCrunch. It will not copy to Word. Title: Add your title The rest of the information can be left with no changes. To have StatCrunch calculate and display the Line of Best-Fit: Click Options in the top left of your graph window with your scatter plot, and go to Edit. You will need to UNDO the Group by, and then in Overlay polynomial order: select the number 1 for a linear equation. (Note: the other options are for non-linear types of regression...save that for another stats class!). When you click Compute! You should now have a line on your graph. If you hover on it, you will see the equation of the line. Please copy/handwrite it and type it onto your lab for me. Round to the nearest hundredths place. 2. Calculate your correlation coefficient (r): Stat Summary Stats Correlation. Select both the variables (the order does not matter). Copy or write this, rounding to the nearest thousandths. Describe what this correlation means to a friend who is not in your stats class. 2 3. You will need a calculator to compute the coefficient of determination ( r ). Include the value, and tell me how would you describe this correlation to a friend who is not in your stats class? 4. Write a short paragraph telling me what all of this means. Did you find a correlation? Did you find causality? If you did, how did you prove it? If you did not, what other factors could be considered? Do you think there should be speed limits? Include any findings on highway speed limits if you used any other sources. Items to turn in: Scatterplot with color coded cities, scatter plot with line of best fit. Both of these scatter plots should have properly labeled axes and a title. Include the equation for the line of best fit. Tell me the correlation coefficient and the coefficient of determination, and answer the questions for these and then do the short paragraph. NOTE: For extra help, in StatCrunch, click Help Browse/Search docs and then either find Scatter plots under Graphics or type Scatter plot in the search box. From that document, there is also a YouTube video if you click the View examples link
