CHAPTER 9 BS PROJECT MANAGEMENT 331 Activity 9.1 Project planning exercise The scenario You are required to construct a project plan for the following BIS development project. Your objective is to schedule the project to run in the shortest time possible. The plan should include all activities, the estimated, elapsed and effort time, and who is to perform each activity in addition, it is necessary to indicate the sequence in which all the tasks will take place. The programs can be scheduled in any order but for each programs the design stage must come first, followed by the programming and finally the documentation Within the context of the extrose, you can assume that the detailed systems analysis has already been carried out and that it is now necessary to perform the design programming and documentation activities. For the purposes of this exercise, we will not include the testing and implementation phases Present your project plan in the form of a Gantt charte Fgure to the showing each task, the sequence in which tasks will be performed the estimated effort and elased time and the resource allocated to each task day 4 days 3 days The activities There are the programs in the system. Each has a deterent level of officulty . Program 1 Difficult Program 2 Easy - Program Moderate Program 4 Moderate . Program 5 Difficult For each level of difficulty, the design, programming and documentation tasks take different amounts of effort time Design Easy peogr Moderate programs 2 days Dillicult programs Programming Easy programe 1 day Moderate programs Difficult programs 6 days Documentation Enny programme day . Moderate program 2 days Difficult programs 3 days Resources In order to complete the project plan, you need to know what resources you have avata For each resource, there are two variables: Work rate. This describes the speed at which the resource works e a work rate of 1.0 means that a tank scheduled to take one day should only take one day to complete satisfactorily, a wosk rate of 15 means that a task scheduled for three daye should only take two days etc.) Avity. Each resource will be available for certain amounts of time during the weak 100% availability = 5 days per week, 50% availability=2.5 days per week etc. In planning your project, work to units of half a day. For simplioty, any task which requires a fraction of fait a day should be rounded up leg 16 days should be rounded up to 2 days) Also a resource can only be scheduled for one task at any one time! 332 PART 2 BUSINESS INFORMATION SYSTEMS DEVELOPMENT Resource availability System designer 1 (SDI) - Work rate 1.0 Availability 100% Systems designer 2 (S02 Work rate 1.5 Arailability Systorns designer 3 (50) Work rate 0.5 Availability 50% 40% Programmer TIP) Work rate Availability 2.0 40% Programmer 2 (P2) Work rate Availability 1.0 100% Programmer 3 Pa Work rate 0.5 Availability 60% Technical author ! Each of them should show across the columns three different tasks for easy, moderate and difficult programs.
