Charitopia is a not-for-profit online platform that enables restaurants to make donations to charity on behalf of their patrons. The site receives payments from restaurants and distributes them to the charities selected by the patrons. This is managed via the distribution of so-called tokens. All charities need to be registered with the Australian Charities and Not-for-Profits Commission (ACNC). A restaurant can sign up to the scheme by entering the name of the restaurant, their contact details, and information on their branches. They can then select from a list of charities that they would like their clients to see. The restaurant then also has a public profile on the Charitopia website that can be accessed by potential patrons. This allows patrons to see which charities can be supported by visiting this restaurant. Via an interface to Google Maps, the patrons can also enter a suburb code and see a list of restaurants listed with Charitopia. A charity can register their interest to receive donations by creating a charity account on Charitopia. This includes the name and logo of the charity, a link to their website, a link to their ACNC record, contact details, bank details, and a free-text description. This information is shown to restaurants and potential patrons. Patrons can browse the list of charities and see which restaurants are associated with them. When a patron makes a payment at a restaurant, they automatically receive five (5) tokens that they can distribute to one or more charities. This process is facilitated via a tablet device that the restaurant needs to provide. If the patron chooses to, they can also purchase additional tokens for 10 cents each, with the cost to be added to their restaurant bill. Optionally, the patron may enter their phone number to receive a digital receipt of their donation via a text message. The receipt will also include a link to the ACNC record, a feature that some patrons will find useful for tax purposes. Charitopia keeps track of the individual donations. At the end of the month, it charges each restaurant the total amount of their individual donations. From that, Charitopia keeps 10% to run its ongoing operations. The remaining 90% of the amount is distributed according to the token distributions specified by the patrons: for each token, nine (9) cents will be transferred via bank transfer to the charities.
