ChatGPT is a new artificial intelligence text generator that has become a major concern for academic institutions. Some students are already using the AI software to generate research papers. Professors who have to grade those papers are concerned that they will be unable to tell when a student has used ChatGPT to complete assignments submitted online.
Luckily, there is some AI detection software available. You are an English Professor and you have decided to put the AI detector to the test before you spend a semester grading papers that may have been generated by ChatGPT. You want to see what factors might make students more likely to use an AI text generator. You randomly assign 20 students to one of two conditions.
In the first condition (X), students are told that their papers will be graded for content and grammar (n1 = 10). In the second condition (Y), students are told that their papers will be graded as credit/no credit assignments (n2 = 10). If those students complete a paper, they will be given a passing grade for the assignment and will be given notes about their performance. Below are the scores assigned by the AI detector for each condition. Scores range from 0-100 and indicate how much of each student's paper was generated by ChatGPT.
Condition 1 (X): 91, 82, 87, 98, 78, 64, 92, 69, 72, 65 Condition 2 (Y): 11, 14, 12, 41, 11, 7, 14, 68, 12, 44
Is this a true experiment? Explain why or why not.
