Chlorine dioxide (ClO2) disinfects water by oxidizing organic matter and microorganisms. It penetrates the cell walls of microorganisms and disrupts their metabolic processes, leading to their death. ClO2 is more effective than chlorine in controlling bacteria and viruses, and it does not produce THMs and HAAs.
