Barriers to Effective Communication

Barriers to effective

communication include:

•Filtering

Filtering refers to a sender manipulating

information so that it will be seen more

favourably by the receiver.

Selective Perception

Receivers in the communication process selectively see and hear based on

their needs,

motivations, experience, background, and other personal

characteristics.

Defensiveness

When individuals interpret another’s message as threatening, they often

respond in ways that retard effective communication.

Language

Words may mean different things to

different people.

Focusing on a Personal Agenda

This occurs when you think that what the person is saying is unimportant to

you at the time.

Emotional Noise

Emotional noise occurs when you are emotionally involved. Words affect

our attitude, our behaviour,

and our blood pressure. Emotional noise

interferes with the effectiveness of communication.

Criticizing the Speaker Being critical may also distract you from the message.

Speech Rate versus Thought Rate

Speakers talk at about 125

-

150 words per minutes; however, you listen

and process words at 600

-

800 words per minute. This difference can cause trouble since it gives you time to daydream and/or to tune the speaker in and out. It also gives the illusion that you are concentrating more attentively than you actually are.

External Noise

This includes all kinds of physical noise and mental noise.
