Choosing a Task: Your instructions should help users to perform a moderately complex task that requires several steps or stages This eliminates common tasks such as shampooing hair, making Kraft Dinner, etc. and complex or inappropriate tasks such as creating a robot, solving a Rubik's Cube, forging a fake ID, constructing a beer bong, etc. When choosing a task, consider the following guidelines: 4 Choose something you are familiar with. It can be something related to your field of study, or something related to a more general audience. The task may involve a device: assembling it, operating it, or fixing it. Or it may involve some process (e.g., changing a tire, registering a Twitter account, making a meal.). are re Your audience is your instructor. This means that if you are describing something quite technical, you may need to define special terms and/or provide a glossary as part of the document. Requirements: (Be Sure to Follow the Instructions) Your task should be explained in 2-4 typed (12-point font) double-spaced pages. . . . . . . No title page is required. The title for your instruction set should be at the top of the first page. Begin with an introduction/purpose statement - an opening paragraph that describes the purpose of the instructions. Who are they written for? Why is it important to follow them? What will be achieved or accomplished by following them? List the required materials, equipment, tools, skills, and/or conditions required to complete the task. Use a numbered list to list the steps in the exact order that they need to be completed. You must use active voice, imperative mood, and parallel structure. Remember to make sure that each step begins with an action verb. Not sure what this means? ("Writing Instructions and Procedures Guide") You are not required to use visuals for this assignment - the emphasis is on written instructions but including a visual or two may be the best way to get your point across. If you do decide to use visuals, it is recommended that you create your own. If you download images from the Internet, please provide the URL with them. (Remember: Proper citations in IEEE style) Consider using headings and sub-headings if the process that you are trying to explain involves multiple parts or phases, or if information is complicated or requires further explanation. Be very specific. Your instructions should include at least 10 steps. Imagine that you asked 100 people to follow your instructions. Would 90% of them be able to do so successfully? Add a closing paragraph that summarizes your instructions, provides further information, offers suggestions for use of the product, or directs the reader to additional sources of information. Revise, edit, and proofread carefully.
