Chrissa and Derek are two entrepreneurs that offer physical training and nutrition planning services. Chrissa is a former women's college basketball star and Derek is a long distance runner. After much encouragement from family and friends, Chrissa and Derek decided to develop a line of endurance snacks. Since they are constantly on the go, and most of their clients are constantly on the go, they knew they wanted to develop a snack line that could be easily transportable and would not spoil quickly Marketing research revealed three types of items that both matched these criteria and aligned with their new product development plans, protein bars, energy shakes, and dried fruit snacks. Further research revealed that protein bars are actually the easiest to formulate and make. As such, Chrlssa and Derek decided not to develop energy drinks because they are too costly to produce and package. They also decided not to develop dried fruit snacks because they could not come up with a competitive advantage for such a product After Chrissa and Derek decided to focus their new product development on protein bars, they came up with different recipes and conducted rigorous financial assessments to make sure that their brand of protein bars would be profitable. They then worked with their team to create three different types of energy bars, crispy rice, crunchy granola, and chewy nut. Chrissa and Derek begon selling each bar on a limited basis in three different cities: San Diego, Houston, and Detroit. The chewy nut bar turned out to be the most popular due to flavor, texture, and the lasting energy it provided. After completing each bar's limited run, Chrissa and Derek partnered with suppliers to begin large-scale production and manufacturing of their chewy nut protein bar, which they ended up calling Powerlast. As soon as the boxes rolled off the assembly line, they shipped them to health-food retailers and fitness centers throughout the United States
