CITEMS is a leading ICT consultancy, providing services exclusively to the Education sector. The projects with a clientele usually last for several months at a time.

Last month, CITEMS has won the contract to overhaul the network infrastructure for SMTAFE. They have three campuses one at Murdoch, one at Rockingham and the other at Thornlie. They will require a comprehensive network design to meet the growing requirements of SMTAFE. You are an employee of CITEMS and have been assigned to oversee the project. Your task will be to see through the whole project. This will include design of the network providing topology diagram, IP addressing, selecting, configuring and implementation of a physical and wireless network, fault-finding and finalise documentation.

Note: Murdoch campus will be connected to other campuses via WAN connection. All three campuses will have admin, student, guest and staff network.

At this stage, SMTAFE has decided to provide limited Wi-Fi access to one floor to test feasibility and limitations. One of the requirement of this project will be to provide coverage map in your floor area and the corridor to provide supporting evidence of this test. They have decided to use an industrial AP with an external Yagi antenna.

In this task you will select, configure and investigate performance of both wired and wireless network. You will investigate both new technologies to implement, trouble-shooting techniques and required documentation to industry standards.

SMTAFE Network requirements:

Student, Admin, Guest and Staff network traffic must have appropriate security measures and performance. Network traffic must be contained for each network. Wireless network must have appropriate coverage and security.

Q1

When designing an overhaul to the SMTAFE network infrastructure, one of your responsibility is to work out the network setup and a suitable IP Addressing scheme.

  1. Explain how SMTAFE's business function can relate to the way networks and VLANs are designed.

b) What features of SMTAFE's business domain may have an impact on any decision making when designing IP subnets?

Response:

Q2

You are investigating protocols and services for your design. Data and voice packets both require transport layer services.

Explain how data and voice services use different transport layer protocols (TCP and UDP) and why.

Response:

Q3

As a network administrator, you must be able to use the IPv4 addressing space effectively.

a) Summarise what information about the network you must consider when designing an IP Addressing scheme for a network.

b) You are given the following host requirements for your design. As part of initial design of addressing, divide the following IP network address (10.100.128.0/18) into 6 separate Ipv4 subnets.Identify the network addresses for each network/campus.

Number of Hosts

Network Address

1000 (Thornlie)

1000 (Murdoch)

1000 (Rockingham)

500 (Admin)

2 (WAN link)

2 (WAN link)

Q4

An internal network technician forSMTAFE identified during the testing phase while investigating why a replacement computer could not be connected to a network using the same switch port as the original PC.

During the troubleshooting process, the technician reconnects the original PC and discovers that it can still connect to the network. Using that switch port.

The assumption is that a problem exists on the switch.

  1. Explain a security feature on a switch port that could potentially prevent a new PC from being able to connect to a network.

b) Recommend a procedure to allow the registration of a new PC on a switch port.

Response:

Q5

As a Network technician working for CITEMS, it is important to manage and administer a network effectively. IP addressing must be designed efficiently for the entire network which will support scalability.

  1. Explain the functions of dynamic host configuration protocol (DHCP).

b) Explain how a DHCP server can be used provide a host with an IP address.

Response:

Q6

As a network administrator for CITEMS, you must have a good understanding of the network protocols and their inherent security features. You are trying to choose a set of protocols for SMTAFE that will make their network secure and reliable. You also need a plan to fault find their network functionality using the TCP/IP model.

  1. List at least three common protocols used for each of the layers of the TCP/IP model.
  2. List a security feature for each these protocols.

c) List a set of commands that can be used to fault find a network for each of the layers of the TCP/IP model.

Response:

Q7

During testing process forSMTAFE network, you received a complaint from HR department that they are unable to access the Internet. However, the internet connectivity in other departments is fine.

What all troubleshooting steps would you take to identify the problem? Provide these steps in a sequence where possible.

Response:

Q8

InSMTAFE network, when sending an email from a PC, explain what happens to data packets at each layer of the OSI model. You must explain how data is encapsulated at each layer.

Response:

Q9

For your design of SMTAFE network, describe the typical network architecture they could use when connecting all campuses to each other with Murdoch being identified as the Head campus or Headquarters (HQ), with the other campuses being identified as branch campuses. Consider that the branch network is accessing all the services from HQ including DHCP and Web services.

a) Sketch a topology diagram that shows the networking components and how they are connected. You may use Cisco Packet Tracer or Visio and take screen shots.

b) What protocols/standards will be used in each part of the architecture.
