Citizens United

Citizens United versus Federal Trade Commission was a 2010 United States Supreme Court case that changed campaign finance laws and, on the side, caused an uproar in complaints and political debates. In summary, the Court held that a corporation has the same First Amendment free speech rights that humans do when political campaigns are concerned. Namely, that means corporations are entitled to fund things like advertisements and other campaign activities. This is obviously a big deal given the amount of money available to large corporations.
