Civic Engagement through Community Service

This project addresses the following course competencies:

1:Explain the role of a business as a citizen and its social responsibility to its various stakeholders.

2:Evaluate the legal, ethical and social implications of business decisions and their impact on various individuals, groups and societies.

To prepare for this portion of the project, you should participate in at least one hour of community service or make a donation of food, new or used clothing or money to a charitable organization. Some possibilities include:

1:Helens Hope Chest (clothing and good donations)

2:Mesa United Way (service opportunities and donations)

3:United Food Bank (food and money donations)

4:Paz de Christo (service)

Final Project Instructions 2

1. Discuss one or two additional opportunities for service that you have noticed around the community. Outline how you might go about addressing these problems on your own or with others if given the opportunity and resources.

2. Choose one or two businesses (for profit) that in addition to making money, are giving back to the community. This may require some Internet research but should be relatively easy to find. Many for-profit businesses are recognizing the importance of giving back to the community and are doing so through environmental, humanitarian and charitable efforts.

3. Give your opinions on the importance of social responsibility in business. For full credit on this section, please look at the Theories of Corporate Social Responsibility. Select the theory you feel is best for a corporation to follow. Explain your position on whether or not a business should care about things other than making money for themselves and their shareholders and to what extent. Discuss whether being socially responsible improves a companys financial performance or is simply a cost of doing business in the U.S. today.
