Clinical Vignette: tienne is struggling with major depression

tienne is 14 years old and attends a regular lower secondary class. He has a 12-year-old sister who doesn't seem to have any particular difficulties. tienne's parents separated six months ago and his father has been depressed since this event. tienne's mother also finds the situation difficult since the separation, but she holds down the fort and takes care of the children full time at the request of the father who is currently unable to assume his family responsibilities. tienne is having a lot of difficulty no longer seeing his father with whom he had an excellent relationship. tienne's story reveals that he has recently had difficulty at school. Since his parents separated, his grades have dropped and he skips classes several times a week. He has a lot of trouble waking up in the morning, as he says he suffers from insomnia and falling asleep. In addition, his teachers have found him more withdrawn for some time. He is poorly motivated in class and refuses to work in a team with his peers. When his class teacher questions him about his mood swings, tienne says he fought with two of his former friends and no longer prefers to see anyone at the moment.
