Coaches are often faced with clients, who are not ready for coaching, don't want coaching, or want coaching, but are not motivated to change how they think, feel, or act. As a manager or a coach in the Human Resources department of an organization, you may not get to choose your clients. What would you do if:

1. You are a manager and your direct report, who you hired and like very much, cannot perform the tasks you are assigning them. You have sent this person for more training and it has not made a difference. What will you do?
2. Alix, a senior manager, is in line for promotion. However, Alix's promotion is in jeopardy and Alix is completely unaware. Alix is intelligent and fast thinking with a sharp analytical approach to issues, admires intelligence in others and believes continually demonstrating their own competence will get high performance ratings, even if this means denigrating others. There have been complaints from others that Alix is intolerant of people who think more slowly from some senior managers and members of Alix's own team. How will you frame your coaching about Alix's current situation?
