Project Specification
1 Summary
Design a network that meets the provided scenario requirements. Then investigate options for using cloud
services as part of the network. Finally, conduct a cyber security risk assessment for the scenario and
recommend security controls.
2 Scenario
You have been consulted to design the computer network for a new restaurant nearby where you live. The
company operating the restaurant already runs three similar restaurants across the city; this new fourth
restaurant will be largest one in the chain, and also be the new base of the company. The owners have
taken this opportunity to fully incorporate IT and networking operations into their business. With a
guarantee of over 200 customers per hour during peak periods, the restaurant has seating for dine-in
customers as well as fulfilling takeaway orders (ordered online, via phone and as walk-ins). To achieve this,
all equipment and terminals in the restaurant will be networked to allow automation and real-time
information retrieval. This includes: cooking appliances, fridges and freezers, coffee machines, customer
self-ordering consoles, service staff consoles, Point-of-Sale registers, various printers, and information
display screens (e.g. for displaying menus and specials). Customers and service staff will use WiFi-enabled
tablets for viewing menus and ordering. At the rear of the restaurant will be the new head office of the
company, which includes facilities for business administration (marketing, finance, CEO, etc.), staff area for
relaxation and meetings equipped with networked entertainment consoles, as well as a training kitchen.
There is also a storage facility, with WiFi-enabled tags and scanners to keep track of supplies. All systems
will be networked and integrated with the various restaurant and business software systems, e.g.,
purchasing, stock tracking, sales, marketing, accounting, payroll, staff information, customer information
and rewards. During peak operation periods as many as 40 service staff may be working in the restaurant.
In addition, there are 15 to 20 staff working in the office area on a daily basis.
While the company will use cloud services for some servers (e.g., website, email), they will continue to use
local servers in the office building for important information (e.g., sales, customer information and
finances, which are important intellectual property for the company).
The company will install IP-based security cameras around and inside the buildings for security purposes.
They will stream video back to a local server in the office for storage and security monitoring. The company
plans to provide free Wi-Fi for dine-in customers (as well as to all staff).
The company requires at least three different IP subnets, one for the main dining and service area, one for
the office and one for the security cameras. However more subnets may be used if justified. The company
requires the use of /24 and/or /16 network masks throughout (no other masks are allowed by the
company).
You have been consulted to design the network for the new restaurant (the other three restaurants are
NOT included in the project). The owner wants to see the design and hear your inputs on a variety of issues
(including cyber security and cloud services). Then the owner will decide whether to further engage your
services for the network build, operation and maintenance.

3 Groups
Conduct this project in a group of two (2) students, where both students must be in the same tutorial class.
Only when there are left-over students (i.e., odd number of students in a class), will a group of three (3) be
allowed (at the discretion of the Unit Coordinator). The expectations of details and quality will be higher for
a group of three than a group of two.
All group members should contribute to all tasks, however a group member may contribute more than the
other(s) on a specific task. Overall, the contributions of each group member should be about the same.
One measure of your contribution to the group is your commits on the group GitHub repository. The
commits must be frequent (not just before submission) and by all members of the group. Normally, a
student will make a commit after a contribution, e.g., write a paragraph, create a diagram. At minimum,
you must commit to GitHub once for each day you work on the project. For example, if you draft the
project plan on a Tuesday, then create the network design diagram on Wednesday, and then on Friday
make further edits and write a paragraph about the design, then at minimum your group must have 3
commit (one for Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday). However, you are encouraged to make commits more
frequently, especially when work on many parts of the project on a single day. Each student that makes the
