COLLAPSE Since the economic downturn, which was largely precipitated by the housing crisis and the Wall Street crash beginning in 2008, many Americans have lost their jobs and have had to survive using unemployment and disability benefits. Since the peak unemployment rate of 10 percent in October 2009, unemployment rates have been steadily decreasing. As of August 2016, the unemployment rate is 4.9 percent for individuals in the United States 16 years and older (Bureau of Labor Statistics Data, 2016). Job loss often leads to feelings of depression and low satisfaction with life, One frequently grieves the loss of a job in much the same way one might the loss of a relationship. Much of one's identity and social life develops in the context of a job. Many people spend more time at work than at home and learning to live without a job can be exhausting, especially when much of one's time is spent searching for a new job. People who have lost their jobs have higher depressive symptoms and are at greater risk of chronic conditions than those with steady work (Catalano & Dooley, 1983; Gallo, Bradley, Siegel, & Kasl, 2000).
