1. Communication in the workspace has become a lot more convenient today with the various channels to do so. Many businesses utilize social media to promote information and e-mail to communicate information to workers. Some businesses today continue to have notice boards with important information or social events. An impending company-wide layoff can be communicated via e-mail, this appears to be the easiest way to relay the news. However, a face-to-face conversation would be a better-suited channel of communication, especially for any individual who is in jeopardy of being laid off or will be laid off. This richness of this information is better communicated by the leader rather than through rumors or misinformation. In the event an employee has questions or concerns, they can be addressed with as much truthful information as is available. This does not necessarily need to be overwhelming, having small face-to-face meetings can alleviate the stress.

Social media, the use of a notice board, or even a group chat can be channels of communication to inform employees of the companys picnic. If this is an upcoming event, employees can save the date by being aware if they will be able to attend. A signup or RSVP list at work or through the group chat can prepare for accommodations for those in attendance. If the list is excessive, an easier channel to record possible attendance can be through a survey sight summing up the RSVPs to have a total possible number of attendances.

2. Implementing new corporate quality goals that will require significant changes in how subordinates perform their tasks would need to be communicated well. While understanding the new goals and ensuring they are easy to complete, communicating such information may require instant feedback. I prefer to have face-to-face verbal communication so that I am transparent about what is expected while leaving room for possible open communication, questions, or concerns. Face-to-face communication builds an understanding of what is expected, and what is important and is usually the better channel of communication when there are changes to be had. I will also send a follow-up e-mail ensuring my employees and I are all on the same page, there are no concerns were not communicated and there is a complete understanding of the changes. This also permits insists on whether an employee is capable and if they are able to adjust to such changes. I can also include newsletters with information on the change and/or utilize social media that can better express the changes and information in my follow-up e-mail to ensure everyone is able to understand the changes and purpose. Making myself available for any future face-to-face communication is also important if any concerns arise. We are a team, and my duty is to ensure my employees are capable, ready, and motivated to get the work done, if they are not, it is my duty to learn why and find solutions to the issue.

3. While verbal communication can get the message across, non-verbal communication is also important. Non-verbal communication is an expression that transmits a message through action or behavior. A friendly smile can express kindness. Leaning in if someone else is, mirroring their body language, can gain trust in the conversation. Using hand gestures similar to the person you are verbally communicating with is also a good gesture expressing understanding and possible agreeableness. Body language says a lot about how you communicate with someone; this is an expression of emotion. Nodding and eye contact is other expressions of building trust. A positive attitude towards the other person is important. Being aware of your facial expressions is also important, a simple eye roll can ruin the conversation or even a mouth motion. Having a bored look or sighing is a sign of annoyance or irritation. Your tone of voice when speaking is also important. While being assertive, one must also be friendly and smooth with your voice.
