Credibility is the audience's perception of whether a speaker is qualified to speak on a given topic and being perceived as qualified by your listeners (Chapter 9 page 184). Establishing credibility within your audience is an important role in giving a speech because it shows the audience that you are qualified, competent, and shows them that you are knowledgeable about the topic. Not establishing credibility within your audience could leave them not trusting you and if they don't trust you, they most likely won't listen to you. Who wants to listen to someone they dont trust?? You can start establishing credibility within your audience first by letting them know your name and why the topic you are going to be talking about matters to you. You can add in personal experiences but it is also important that you do your research on the topic and state where your sources are coming from. Give your speech with confidence, speak expressively and fluently. In doing so it shows that you know what you're talking about and that you're passionate about it. An example I'd like to share to show perspective is when doctors are going to give a family good or bad news about a loved one, they speak clearly on the situation so that you can understand, they explain what your loved one should or shouldn't do, give advice and most importantly the doctor listens to what the family may have to say back and answers any questions they may have, engaging with them. The audience will be more interested in a speech if they the speaker knows what they are talking about.
