A past decision that I made that did not work out the way I intended was when I was tasked with ensuring that cruisers be kept clean at all times. The decision-making model that I used at that time was probably the bounded rationality model. This model is "A model that recognizes the limitations of decision-making processes. According to this model, individuals knowingly limit their options to a manageable set and choose the best alternative without conducting an exhaustive search for alternatives" (Carpenter, 2013). Looking back, I think that I used this model (even though I didn't know it existed) simply because I was told to "make it happen now" by my supervisor. Because of this direct order and lack of time to "make it happen", I quickly decided to create a solution that was without examination into the problem, direct and lacked empathy for those who would be carrying out the duties.
Two of the decision-making challenges that led to the faulty decision were "availability bias" and "framing bias". Carpenter (2013) describes these as "a situation in which information that is more readily available is viewed as more likely to occur" and "the tendency of decision makers to be influenced by the way that problems are framed" respectively. These challenges contributed to the results of my decision because the information that was given to me and the way it was framed to me was that our Chief was extremely disappointed in the cleanliness of the cruisers (to his own standards) and unbeknownst to me, the problem was not as big of a problem as it was led onto me, because of this, I felt directed to fix this "problem" with a heavy hand. The decision I made as to how we would rectify the issue was a bit on the extreme side and resulted in counterintuitive results. Needless to say, my decision and the way I would manage the issue did not last long and ultimately a better decision was made, which came with a better outcome.
