Community capacity building focuses on the community's ability to engage in its chosen purposes and course of action by building commitment, resources, and skill development (Scott & Wolfe, 2015). A community's capacity consists of the interaction of human and social capital and organizational resources that can be leveraged to solve problems and improve the well-being of the community (Scott & Wolfe, 2015). The ability to initiate change can be accomplished if institutional and social relations are in place to reach all community members (Scott & Wolfe, 2015). Institutions also must be accountable to their stakeholders, able to mobilize resources needed for community change and have a system in place to develop and maintain initiatives (Scott & Wolfe, 2015). The four strategies for community capacity building involve leadership and organizational development, community organizing, and fostering inter-organizational collaboration (Scott & Wolfe, 2015).
Communities can approach problems using oppositional tactics to bring about end goals. This conflict strategy is achieved through building social power, leveraging resources, and improving negotiation by applying direct pressure to powerful individuals or organizations (Scott & Wolfe, 2015). Another strategy is consensus-based strategies that promote mutual respect and positive interaction by focusing on opportunities for mutual benefit (Scott & Wolfe, 2015). Collaboratively working with organizations is important because it involves creating partnerships that help mobilize and influence systems (Baciu et al., 2017).
. These partnerships can help serve as catalysts for changing policies, programs, and practices with a shared understanding and common goal (Baciu et al., 2017).
. Effective partnerships increase the community's capacity to shape outcomes and foster multi-sector collaboration by applying their unique skills and access to resources to serve the community (Baciu et al., 2017)
These are good ways to but how would we get the ball rolling on those?
