- A lot of people have a cat at home. In fact, there are about 85 million cats in the U.S.,living in 35% of all homes. Very few people, however, know how this trend for a pet cat began. In fact, new studies claim that wild cats weren't just taken into our homes and trained once in historybut two times.
- It is now believed that cats were successfully introduced to people's homes about9,000 years ago in southwest Asia. It was only 1,000 years after this that cats became welcome in the households of Egyptthe place where many people thought cats had first lived with humans.
- Experts think that cats first moved closer to humans as a result of increased farming. As humans began growing food in large fields, these attracted mice in large numbers. Cats found plenty of food in these areas and therefore found them attractive places to live close to. A hungry cat can eat three to six mice a day, so farmers were happy, too.
- [4] Cats sleep between 12 and 16 hours a day, but anyone who has ever owned a cat knows how much they also love to play. When a cat sees something move or hears any sound, the cat's eyes and ears are immediately focused on a possible friend to play with or a tasty snack to eat. This natural behavior was perfect for hunting mice and rats on ships. Most ships had just one cat, but it was in this form of employment that they began to travel the world.
[5] Wherever humans built homes, farms, markets, and cities, you saw cats. There are now believed to be around 600 million small cats in the world, with about 100 million of these living in the wild.
