Data is basically a way to determine many factors that correlate behaviors with facts. These facts are generally created to understand how effective or ineffective something is. In the Human Resource field data is collected using the information to establish a baseline or to reach goals within a company or organization. This may include surveys, graphs, religion, gender, race, pay, etc. The impact of this type of data can determine how a company can improve the quality of life in the workplace for others. For example, using an employee feedback survey, the outcome of that data can determine if an employee is satisfied with the workplace or what they can do to improve it. In the Army, there is something called an ice comment, and anyone can make an ice comment. It can either be good, bad, or indifferent. The Army uses these ice comments to address whatever issues that may be going on that they had no idea about. If a soldier wrote that they did not like the customer service representative because they did not greet the soldier, then they can give feedback by writing it in the ice comment. This helps with communicating any issues firsthand instead of letting them get out of control.
Data and communication correlate with one another because HR employees must demonstrate how effective their practices or methods are when it comes to employees and data. Big data refers to how the information relates to corporate financial statements, HR databases, employee surveys, and feedback and how it affects profits and costs. (Noe 2023, p. 9) A company’s overall performance is influenced by its labor force. Communication effectively must be greatly considered, or improvement and feedback is non-existence which in turn will affect employees. Data and analytics help companies understand where they are in the moment and what they can do to upgrade any challenges they face. Google was the first to use data and analytics to improve employee performance. Understanding what customers want and being able to communicate that to employees are helpful to every department in a business. This plays on the communication skills of the employee rendering the service to customers. Basically, if an organization does not collect data the likelihood of there being an improvement in employee productivity and communication is lower because data is used to improve the overall performance of the company. The evolution of technology has made it possible for companies to have a database that understands past trends and influences on a company.
