Conflict can be incredibly uncomfortable and can cause an unhealthy work environment if not handled correctly. I can recall a few times throughout my career where I have had a negative experience with conflict, but one stands out among the rest. Just a few years ago I found myself in a conflicting situation with a peer of mine. My peer and I were both supervisors of two different sections with two different sets of personnel. One of my members had been late to an event that was being attended by members of both of our sections. My peer decided to write him up and send the paperwork to upper management without the member I supervise or I being notified. A week goes by and I am alerted to the situation and I did not handle it as I should have. I was angry and we ended up in a verbal dispute. Thankfully a third party was able to calm the situation down. I was upset because it was not within his right to take this action and that the punishment did not fit the crime. What made things worse, my peer was unable to admit his wrong, which extremely aggravated me. This led to me having an unhealthy response to conflict through my explosive, angry and resentful actions (Help Guide, n.d.). I understand now how I could have handled that situation better. Showing up to address this situation with a calmer mind and possibly a third party with me who is aware of the situation would be the ideal way to handle this type of conflict.
