Consider for a moment the discourse community concept from the Swales reading. Take $2$ minutes to brainstorm a list of some of the groups you take part in that might be considered DCs$.($The #$1$ rule of brainstorming is to not overthink things. So go for it and jot down all the groups you can think of that might be DCs$.)$

Now, put on your critical thinking hat and more closely consider what you read about how Swales classifies DCs$.$ Choose at least two but no more than four groups from your list to work with in this exercise.

Test it$.$ Can you come up with an example of each of Swales' six criteria for each potential DC$?($ Refer to section $"2\mathrm{.}3$ A conceptualization of discourse community" pp$.24-27).$ For example, for #$1,$ you would list some of the broad goals of your chosen discourse community; for #$2,$ you'd list some of the ways people in your selected discourse community communicate with each other, etc.

Reflect: What did you notice in his exercise? How easy or hard is it to find DCs in your life? Why or why not? Respond in a few sentences.
