Consider the following mini-conversation:
A: "Did Sam come to class today?"
B: "Come to class? He doesn't even remember that he's enrolled!"
To me, person B's response seems to convey (at least) these five propositions:
(1) Sam did not come to class today.
(2) Sam is a student.
(3) Sam doesn't remember that he's enrolled in the class.
(4) Sam is enrolled in the class.
(5) Sam is a man.
(assuming Sam is an adult)
Person B's response could convey many other things as well, but I want you to focus on these
five. I would like you to tell me whether each of the pieces of information above is part of
the assertion of B's response, a presupposition of B's response, or an implicature of B's re-
sponse. You should explain and justify your answers by showing me the appropriate tests, and
describing their results.
For running the tests, consider He remembers he's enrolled to be the negation of He doesn't even
remember he's enrolled (that is, when you form the negation, ignore the even). Also, ignore
the question in Person B's response when constructing your test sentences (that is, ignore the
"Come to class?" part of Person B's response).
