Consider the following scenario then complete the questions below:
Monster.com uses a three-tier client-server architecture that has 150 Web servers and 3- database servers in its main site in Indianapolis. It plans to move that to 400 next year by gradually growing the main site and adding a new site with servers in Maynard, Massachusetts, just in time for spring rush. The main Web site has a set of load-balancing devices that forward web requests to the different servers, depending on how busy they are.
Graham, a Solution Architect with Monster.com says the major challenge is that 90 percent of the traffic is not simple requests for Web pages but, rather; search request (e.g., network jobs available in New Mexico), which require more processing and access to the database servers. Several copies of each posting and rsum are kept on several database servers to improve access speed and provide redundancy in case a server crashes, so just keeping the database servers in sync so that they contain correct data is a challenge.
Questions:
1. Draw a physical architecture diagram for the future system that includes Maynard and Massachusetts. Attach a screen shot of the diagram here.
2. Outline the issues that Monster.com would face apart from what was identified by Graham.
3. Would you buy your own servers or rent them through services like Amazon Web Services. Which would you choose and why?
4. Describe two different testing scenarios that need to be completed before going live. Briefly explain what will be tested, how it will be tested and why it is important.
5. If you were the project manager for the project to add a new site in Maynard what would be some of the major milestones on your project plan and who would be key team members on your project (list their job title).
