Consider two masses connected by a massless string over a frictionless pulley. If the masses are 12 kg and 14 kg, what is (a) the acceleration of each mass? (b) the tension in the string? 1. Draw a diagram of the pulley system. Label all dimensions and forces. What does your intuition tell you will happen when the masses are released? What can you say about the tension in each side of the string? 2. Draw a free body diagram for each mass (include the co- ordinate system for each diagram). 3. Write a Newton's 2nd law equation for the vertical forces acting on the 12 kg mass. What about the forces in the horizontal direction? 4. Write a Newton's 2nd law equation for the vertical forces acting on the 14 kg mass. 5. Simultaneously solve your equations from 3 and 4 to find the acceleration of the masses. 6. Now find the tension in the string
