Considering the case of Van Orden v. Perry,

To what extent do you think Supreme Court Justices are able to divorce their personal religious beliefs from how they see a challenge based on religious freedoms? Is it a contradiction for someone who has a religious belief to deny or disregard that the word of the person's deity, as taught by the person's religion, must guide the decision?
