Content: Course Project

Date: Monday, September 17, 2018

In order to provide all students with practical exposure to database design, development, administration and security, students will be asked to develop a database for storing and retrieving data required by sub-system of an organization.

Steps for developing the database are detailed below:

Choose any sub-system of any organization. You can choose the organization where you currently work. You will need detailed knowledge of the workings, people (staff) and technology used at the organization. The database project must be completed within 4 weeks so choose a sub-system to develop the database and not the entire organization. You can also develop a database for a charity or a place of worship, your own business, your family's or friend's business, or an organization or activity your children may be involved in.

Examples of a sub-system include:

- Order tracking database in the customer service department of the organization

- Customer resolution database for IT support department

- Benefits tracking system for the Human resource department

- Donors database for you a charity or non-profit you support

- Inventory management/customer/order database for a home business

- Players and games database for your child's soccer/baseball/football league

Note:

(A) Please do not reveal any policies, practices, IP addresses, vendors and IT equipment specific to your company in the document. To maintain confidentiality of data please use an alias for your organization and any employee of the organization. Example: ABCD, Inc.

(B) To make it manageable, you should have more than 3 tables but less than 6 tables.

(C) Remember if you have a many-many relationship between two tables, you will need to resolve it by adding in an intermediate table where the relationship between the two tables to the intermediate table will be one-many and many-one.

Parts I, II, and III are due at the end of week 4:

Part I (30 points):

Introduction - Background of the organization (30 points)

- Provide a brief introduction of the sub-system and the organization in one paragraph

Part II (60 points):

ER/Class Diagram--Draw the class diagram for your proposed database (Screenshots of diagram)

Part III (70 points):

(A) Description of tables (10 points)

- In a couple of sentences, provide a brief description of each table in your database. Also include a short description of the columns/attributes from each table.

(B) Description of keys - Primary, foreign, composite (20 points)

- In a couple of sentences, provide a brief description of the primary, foreign and composite keys for each table.

(C) Data types for each attributes (20 points)

-In a couple of sentences, provide reasoning for selecting data types for each attribute/column.

(D) Description of relationships (20 points)

- In a couple of sentences provide a brief description of the relationships between the tables of your database.
