Mulan recently celebrated her 17th birthday where her friends challenged her to join the beauty pageant or famously known as Unduk Ngadau Kaamatan. This pageant is held in May annually during the Kaamatan festival at 'Hongkod Koisan' of KDCA, Penampang, Sabah. By falsely claiming herself as 22 years old with a fake identity card, Mulan successfully convinced Sajat, a professional event planner, to become her manager for all events related to the pageant. In return, Mulan will bear all expenses and pay Sajat RM4000.00 as his service fee to be paid a week before the competition. Mulan also promised to pay Sajat another RM1000.00 if she won. All contestants will be required to wear a creative ethnic's clothes by local designers during the 'Sodop Pintutunan' (Introduction Night). Contestants will also need to wear their traditional costumes and accessories on the final day itself. Demand for these outfits will increase as the competition neared, leading Mulan to start preparing as early as March. She borrowed RM2000.00 from Sajat and promised to pay him back with extra RM500.00. However, due to the RMO and fears of COVID-19, the Kaamatan Festival has been cancelled. Sajat then asked Mulan to pay the RM2500.00 in which Mulan refused and denied liability.
