The components in the Bill of Materials may be manufactured in-house, manufactured by a contract manufacturer, or procured through a vendor. Regardless of the origin of the components, having accurate, detailed data on those items is crucial to efficient, cost-controlled, error-free production. Analyzing trends across that data then opens up opportunities for better performance. This project requires you to create a complete packaging Bill of Materials for an individual food or beverage product. You will then analyze that data set combined with other data across a theoretical companys packaging portfolio. INTRODUCTION A Bill of Materials can have a single level under a finished product or multiple levels rolling up to the finished product through sub-assemblies, recipes, or formulas (See Figure 1 & 2 below)1 . Figure 1: Single-level Bill of Materials 1 Rouse, M. (2018). Definition: Bill of Materials (BOM). https://searcherp.techtarget.com/definition/bill-of-materials-BoM Copyright 2021 by Adam Armstrong. This should include primary, secondary, and transportation packaging. Students are not required to, but may add a multilevel ingredient BOM that includes connected formulas and associated ingredients if desired. Copyright 2021 by Adam Armstrong. All rights reserved. An overview of how to use Specright will be provided. Sample use cases and demonstrations of how businesses use Specright to manage and analyze their packaging data will also be included in the course curriculum. Students will be expected to create digital specification records for a finished product (e.g. 8 Pack of Frozen Chicken Sandwiches) and the associated packaging Bill of Materials. Each packaging item in the Bill of Materials will need to be accompanied by a complete specification, including key data attributes and attached files such as CAD drawings, print cards, and die lines. Please use any experience from your education or career to build the most accurate and comprehensive specifications. Copyright 2021 by Adam Armstrong. All rights reserved. These six (6) reports will then need to be combined in a dashboard to help others visually understand the data. In addition to the dashboard and reports in Specright, students will need to export at least one data set and analyze that data further in Excel. The data set can cover any type of packaging. The analysis should utilize Excel functions to find some impactful conclusion within the packaging data optimization opportunities, cost-savings, sustainable alternatives, or other unique insights. Finally, students will need to write a three (3) page written report explaining the dashboard to an executive viewing it, highlighting what actions a business might make from the individual reports, and detailing anything unique about the packaging items in your Bill of Materials. NOTE: Try to make the packaging specifications as accurate as possible. Utilize learnings from your other classes and your packaging education. You can also search the internet for sample specifications and documents/drawings for materials that you are not as familiar with. Data Quality is only 15% of your Final Project grade, but good specification data will help drive the rest of the projects success! Copyright 2021 by Adam Armstrong. All rights reserved. The final deliverables include: 1. A Finished Good specification including a Bill of Materials with at least 5 packaging components 2. 5+ individual packaging specifications with complete data and attached files 3. 6 reports on the data in this fictional companys packaging portfolio 4. A dashboard combining the 6 reports with graphs best visualizing the data 5. An Excel document with further analysis of the data, featuring at least one conclusion from the analysis 6. A 3 page written report explaining the dashboard, highlighting why a company would care about the individual reports and excel analysis, and detailing anything unique about the packaging for your Finished Good REPORT Please be concise with contextual information and focus on the unique elements of your specifications data and reporting. The report should not exceed 4 pages, Calibri font, size 12, single space, page margins 1. Cover sheet, references2 and any appendix are not included in the page limit. Grading of the project report will be conducted in accordance to the Rubric on the next page. Deadline: Midnight PST. Sunday, November 14th 2 BibMe (2017).
