Correct Design, Correct IV or Predictor, Correct DV or Criterion for each scenario.

Below, you will find a series of research scenarios. For each of the scenarios:

1. State whether the design is an experiment or a correlation.

2. State the Independent or Predictor variable (each study has one or the other).

3. State the Dependent or Criterion variable (each study has one or the other).

Please use the letters and numbers in your document to organize your answers (e.g. "A1. The design is... A2. The independent variable is... etc."). You must state the variables in concrete operational terms.

A. A research team is interested in the relationship between personality and effort. They recruit 100 college freshman. With a survey, they record each participant's Conscientiousness score. When the same students are sophomores, the researchers give them a survey and record the number of hours that the students spent studying in the past year. Researchers analyze the relationship between scores on the two variables.

B. A research team is interested in the relationship between arousal and memory. They recruit 10 participants, and the same 10 participants take part in 4 sessions: In one session, they are given 10 mg of the drug Hubucillin (a drug designed to arouse the sympathetic nervous system). In another session, they are given 20 mg of the drug. In a third session, they are given 30 mg of the drug. In a final session, they are given a placebo. In each of the 4 sessions, the participants study a list of 25 words, and then freely recall as many of the words as they can. Researchers record the number of words remembered, in each session. Researchers analyze the mean number of words remembered, over the 4 sessions.

C. A research team is interested in the relationship between development and coordination. They recruit participants from the 1st, 3rd, 5th, and 7th grade classes of a local school. They measure the score that each participant achieves on Dance-Dance-Revolution. They analyze the differences between the grades, in the average score.

D. A research team is interested in the relationship between athleticism and intelligence. They recruit 50 undergraduate students. In the first part of the study, the participants run a 3K race, and the investigators record the order in which they cross the finish line, 1-50. Two weeks later, an intelligence test is administered to the same participants. The investigators rank their performances on the test 1-50. Finally, the researchers evaluate the relationship between the two sets of ranks.

E. A research team is interested in the relationship between political affiliation and friendliness. They conduct their study at a local mall. As participants enter the building, researchers survey them and record their political affiliation. Researchers observe the actions of the Democratic and Republican participants, observing the number of times that they say "Hello" to other people in the mall. The investigators then compare Republicans and Democrats on the total number of "Hellos."
