We are going to examine the electric and magnetic fields associated with a 100 MHz radio wave from an FM radio station. The wave is propagating in the +x direction and its electric field is parallel to the z-axis. Since the electric and magnetic fields vary with space and time, it is easiest to visualize these waves if you make graphs where either the time or the spatial location is held fixed. The graph below is basically a "snapshot" of the electric field at time zero. The measurements for this "snapshot" were made 10 km from the antenna generating the signal. ..f.... 0.25 .... ..;.. ..j... Ez (N/C) -..-... -.. ... 0.125 ....... 1.5 4.5 6 x (m) -0.125 -..;... -0.25 - ....... ...... -...j.... ....... -..j....... ... .... -..-...1. What are the wavelength and wavenumber for this wave? Explain. 2. What are the period and the angular frequency for this wave? Explain.3. This traveling electromagnetic wave has the general form E = Emax cos(kx + wt + () z. Is the + sign or the - sign appropriate in this case? Explain. 4. What value of o is needed to describe this wave? Explain. 5. Now substitute in for everything in the expression in Question #3. 6. Graph Ez versus x on the graph below at the following three times: 0.25 x 10-8 s, 0.5 x 10-8 s and 0.75 x 10-8 s and label them. You do not need a calculator to do this. You should be thinking about how far the wave travels in these carefully chosen times. If you or any other students at your table have different colored pens or pencils, this will be much easier to view if each of the three graphs is in a different color. 0.25 Ez (N/C) 0.125 x (m) -0.125 -0.25
