Problem 3 Suspension System for a Motorcycle Modified from Analysis and Design of Dynamic Systems by Cochin and Plass The objective of a suspension system is to minimize the transmission of road bumps to the rider (also to keep the wheels in contact with the road but we will not investigate this here). Since road and rider conditions may vary, the design is often a compromise. In order to analyze the system, the road and the vehicle must be modeled. The suspension system can be represented by an equivalent vertical spring-damper parallel network which lies between the road, (a, and the vehicle mass, (M). The actual system and its free body diagram are shown below.
